Lotus Esprit S1 Chassis 0100G 'The First Production Esprit
1:43 Scale Model In Signal Red, the Lotus Esprit transformed Colin Chapman's small Norfolk-based company into a bona fide supercar manufacturer. It was closely based on a concept car built by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Ital design which debuted at the 1972 Turin Motor Show and used a modified Lotus Europa chassis specially made for the project by Mike Kimberley and his team in Norfolk then shipped to Italy. The production Esprit, visibly related to the concept, was unveiled in 1975 and deliveries got under way in the autumn of 1976. The £7883 Esprit, which used Lotus’ new 2-litre 907 engine, followed Chapman’s philosophy of ‘adding lightness’ and weighed less than 2000lbs, giving it impressive performance.
